I recently got an Acer 6920G-583 laptop as part of a mobile broadband package.

As part of the deal you get an internet dongle which looks like a memory stick which you plug in to the laptop to access broadband when you can’t get a WiFi signal.

I used to pay £19.99 per month with AOL for 2Mbps landline broadband and while this isn’t as reliably fast, I’m not surprised as it is mobile.

Let’s get back to the laptop.

I was attracted to the Acer 6920G-583 because of its great specification.

You always pay more for a laptop than a desktop of the same power so I was thinking of buying a desktop.

Happily, I found the Acer 6920G-583 to have strong specifications for the price.

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor is better than the Celeron and Pentium dual core processors and is one of the better ‘T5′ models, which is something I want.
The only real problem is Windows Vista, which is really slow!
This is not a criticism of the Acer in particular though as all new laptops and desktops come with this version of Windows now.
Apparently as more programs better utilize multi core technology, Vista will come in to its own. So, at least I’m future proofed!

Returning to the laptop I’m supposed to be reviewing it’s 3GB RAM are something I love and wont need to upgrade – a bit like the very accommodating 320GB hard drive which is currently 80% empty with all my music and videos on it!

I like to have lots of open browser windows, games and videos open at the same time and the NVIDIA GeForce 9500 allows me to do this and watch blu-ray movies at HD quality without jerkiness – a weak point for many laptops.

3.6Kg is not light but for a great machine I’m fine with that.

I do a lot of work from my PC so I’d rather a quick PC, large storage and big screen than light weight.

The colour, the keyboard and the blu-ray player were bonuses for me, as was the memory card reader.

For something more portable, get a net-book.

They are pretty fast, run XP and a very portable, but if you do a lot of work choose a laptop otherwise you will regret it.

That is just one man’s opinion, having tried them both I am happy with the Acer 6920G-583 .
